Colposcopy is a medical diagnostic procedure to examine a magnified view of the cervix as well as the vagina and vulva.
The procedure is done using a colposcope, which provides a magnified view of the areas, allowing the doctor to visually distinguish normal from abnormal appearing tissue.
The doctor may decide to take a biopsy during the procedure for further pathological examination.
Pre colposcopy
Colposcopies and biopsy’s can be uncomfortable; you may choose to take some pain relief 30mins prior to your appointment.
Post colposcopy
It is common to have some light bleeding for a few days post colposcopy especially if you have had a biopsy. You may experience some mild cramping. which you can take a mild analgesic for.
Post biopsy
After a biopsy you may also experience a brown coloured discharge, some spotting or light bleeding for a few days. This is residue from the medication used to assist healing. You can use a liner or pad during this time.
It is recommended that post colposcopy/biopsy you avoid sexual intercourse, swimming, baths and spas for 2 weeks. Showers are fine. You should also avoid using tampons, menstrual cups etc. during this time. This is to reduce the risk of infection post biopsy.
